For the 30th Anniversary documentary — 30th Anniversary Script.html. Built from the fifteen interviews transcribed so far (Don Matheny, Pete & Kristi Sciacchetano, Rob Carter, Johnny Hill, Dan Lord, Wayne & Classy Francis, Emy Vazquez, Josh & Jessica Fuentes, Marco & Tiina Geraci, Adam Bartlett, Mundo Meneses, Parker VanBlaricom, Adrian & Leigh Wright and, new this week, Brian Pitre and Matt Anzivino — about 12¼ hours of interviews) plus the six 30 Stories content assessments, which hold thirty more voices, one per year.
New, 5 October: member voices. A first pass sets lines from the thirty 30 Stories interviews beside the documentary’s beats (Member voices, after the five movements). The rhyme Movement V is cut to is already in the members’ own words, first Sunday by first Sunday from 1997 to 2025, and Parker’s father answering the altar call, Phyllis finding the church on TV and Yunna finding it online give Movements II–IV the member’s view they lacked.
What changed since 25 September. Two interviews filmed 1 October fill beats nobody else covers. Pastor Matt Anzivino (MA, 37 min) puts the prison locations on film: the warden’s call about two and a half years ago, Sunday services at the Shelby County Division of Corrections and 201 Poplar “just like a church service here” (MA 015), over 3,000 fresh starts (MA 051), the first baptisms in lockdown at 201 (MA 064–067), and released residents who bring their families to Highland and Austin Peay (MA 055–060). He also met John in Baton Rouge about forty years ago, playing in the band together (MA 074–076). Brian’s own interview (BP, 29 min) carries the other two. The TV years: John’s vision to “reach so much more of Memphis”, the January 2008 launch on three local stations, six at its height and the most-watched local program in Memphis, and a fresh start moment John filmed every week for the viewer (BP 016–019, 037–041). And COVID’s Memphis side: online in a week on the strength of the TV years, John live every night from Houston Levee so that “nobody was forgotten”, and new people who found the church online (BP 021–036, 042). The first five minutes are a false start Brian set aside on camera (BP 012); quote from BP 016 on.
What changed since 17 September. Four interviews landed exactly where the first draft said the film was thinnest, 2002–2017, and one of them hands the film its ending. Adam Bartlett dates the building story (Germantown Parkway bought around 2007, the Collierville YMCA, Houston Levee opened February 2010, the auditorium begun in 2016, the Global Hub breaking ground in August 2026). Mundo Meneses carries Outreach (the first Serve Truck bought from the stage, Read to Lead, the COVID food lines). Parker VanBlaricom is the Axis kid of 2005 who has run the Axis Conference since 2018. The Wrights bring South Africa and the Bible School — the two things the script’s Future section asks for clips of.
The short version. Go chronological; what’s on film now covers all thirty years. Its shape is a rhyme the script does not yet use — the 2020s are the 1990s again — and, new this week, a spine that runs the whole length of the film. After Nairobi, John and Leslie “felt like the Lord told them that he would replace them 200 times over on the mission field” (MM 076). Thirty years later the church that sent them is joining the family: “Nairobi Lighthouse Church that sent Pastor John and Pastor Leslie to Memphis… They’re becoming a part of the Life Church family” (MM 120–121). The story can open in Nairobi and close in Nairobi. Five movements, in order, each owning one or two values. The bookends stay: the Intro, John’s VO over a scene shot for it (John and Leslie entering the building, the green room, the team, the morning’s service flows), and the Future sit-down. So the film starts in the present and the story goes back to Nairobi from there. The “Features” block shrinks to a short Identity bridge (the pressure test’s reshape, below).
Two cautions. The middle is filled — by staff. Movement III now has six voices, and every one of them worked for the church; the member’s-eye view of 2002–2017 comes only from the 30 Stories witnesses, so pin them. And the founding is still over-served — Matheny, the Sciacchetanos and Rob Carter all cover 1996–2002 well; hold Movements I–II to about a third of the film.

Who is not on film yet, and which beats it costs. Pastor John & Leslie (8 October — the spine; see the brief below). Nashville and DC — Shaston & Kendal Hunter (Sat 10 Oct) and Andreas & Jerrica Nunley (Sun 18 Oct); question cards built. Dino Rizzo — interview planned in Birmingham, no date yet (the script’s Early Years: the lunch, the encouragement in the tough season). Leslie on Zoe — Johnny and the Geracis mention it, nobody tells it (Carol Moody remembers Leslie’s Chick Nights before it; see Member voices). Nobody on film mentions the 40-day fast or the billboard; if those beats stay, they are John’s to tell.

The proposal — five movements
The script’s Section II is already chronological. What changes is that each stretch of time gets an owner-value, the six “Features” move inside the stretch where the film demonstrates them, and the last movement is cut to rhyme with the first two — and now to close the circle the first one opens.
Intro
John’s voiceover over a morning at the church · ~2 min, as scriptedThe script’s opening stands, and it now has its picture. Pastor John’s voiceover (“Did I see all of this when we were just starting out 30 years ago?”) plays over a scene shot for it: John and Leslie entering the building and going into the green room, members of the team meeting them there, and the two of them looking over the service flows for the morning. At the script’s 1:30 mark the montage of worship and preaching takes over and lands on the card The Life Church: 30 Years of Faithful Ministry.
- Why it suits the chronological shape: the film opens in the present, inside the “all of this” John is asked about: the building, the team, a morning’s services. Movement I then goes back to Nairobi, and the rest of the film answers his question in order. The Future sit-down brings it back to now.
- Shoot day: Wednesday 7 October, the day before the sit-down.
- Shoot note: keep rolling past the service flows, through the script’s “praying before we walk into service” and the walk out. The intro may not need it, but it gives the edit an option for the last shot: after the Future sit-down, John and Leslie walking into the service, closing the frame the intro opens. The script’s production timeline pairs this b-roll with the John & Leslie sit-down.

Anchor scene: the living-room call to plant (DM 037), the retreat and the stadium send-off (DM 044, 117), the phone call (DM 064 or the clean retake 119), Don’s connection to Dr. King (066). New: the word that sets up the whole film — “he would replace them 200 times over on the mission field” (MM 076). Multiplied
the city and the next generation, 2002–2017 · owns Outreach, Young People, Worship · ~25%No longer the thin middle — now the fullest movement, and the risk flips to crowding. Katrina is the doorway: three future leaders arrive through one storm — Dan handed the relief with no chainsaw (DL 013), Johnny hearing John on the radio (JH 002–003), Parker meeting Dan on the Mississippi coast (PV 030–033). Then four threads, each with one owner:
- Young People (Dan → Parker): thirty kids to a sold-out conference. Dan founds the culture (the chant, DL 090; “I want a next gen revolution,” DL 079); Parker is the proof it worked — the 7th grader of 2005 handed the keys at Starbucks in 2018 (PV 047–049), 200 students in 2009 to over 2,000 by 2022 (PV 103–105). Kaymen (30S 2014) is the member’s version.
- Outreach (Mundo): “not only have church, but be the church” (MM 002) — red bags to Read to Lead (MM 013–017, 031–033, 036–038), and the scene: John and Leslie standing up one Sunday to buy the first Serve Truck, $75,000 by the end of the weekend (MM 052, 074–075).
- Buildings (Adam): the whole multi-site gap is closed. Owning Germantown Parkway (AB 019) → John’s prayer and phone call — “we need to get out of this location” (AB 028) → the YMCA, baptisms in the pool (AB 065–072) → the Forest Hill trade (AB 074–078) → Houston Levee, Feb 2010 (AB 079–080) → the auditorium, “a dream come true, but it’s not the dream” (AB 116–117). His “I’m getting emotional” over selling Germantown Parkway (AB 053) is the movement’s quiet moment.
- Worship (Johnny): Kids Life stage boxes to overseeing every location (JH 006–019); “We create space for God to create moments” (JH 038).
- The TV years (Brian): the script’s “influence in the city” beat, which no one else covers. John’s vision to “reach so much more of Memphis” (BP 016), the January 2008 launch, the most-watched local program (BP 038–039), and the fresh start moment, “one-on-one between Pastor John and the viewer” (BP 040–041). Quote from the clean takes, BP 016–019 and 037–042; BP 001–015 is a false start.
- Santiago (25 May 2014) closes the movement as the bridge to a family of churches (JJ 008–019) — and Mundo’s team met the Fuenteses on a mission trip (MM 089), so the Missions thread from Movement I runs straight into it.
The pressure test’s proof-point is now a fair test. Rough-assemble this movement first: if six voices play as scenes, the structure holds; if they play as a staff roll-call, cut to three threads (Young People, Outreach, Buildings) and let Worship live in the Identity bridge.
- Script beats absorbed: Growth 2002–2008 · Going Multi-Site · Axis Conference · Serve Trucks · Santiago · Houston Levee · (Zoe — Leslie’s, still missing).

They’re not territorial” (EV 098). Diversity’s most articulate voice is Wayne (Black Fist White Knuckles, WC 074–078, and the podcast it birthed, Leadership in Black and White, WC 079–090). COVID ends the movement, and now has its Memphis side: the church moves online in a week on the strength of the TV years (BP 021–026, 042) and John is live every night from Houston Levee with virtual guests, because “we wanted to make sure that nobody was forgotten” (BP 027–028); people who had never been to the church find it online and come in person when the doors reopen in August, while Make Room coaches other churches’ livestreams over Zoom (BP 029–036); the drive-through food lines (MM 022–030); Santiago the weekend it shut (WC 062–066); Easter from an office in New York (WC 070).

the founding story, again, 2020–2027 · owns Vision · ~25%Cut to rhyme: Florence’s ninety people in an unheated lemon house against the Home Builders hall; Fitchburg’s eviction-then-building and Santiago’s storm-then-Ritz against the Mega Market; Johannesburg’s sixteen people and 1,000 rand (AL 040) against Memphis’s seven. Adrian says it outright — “God did the same miracle twice” (AL 136). The prisons (Matt) are the closest rhyme of all: church in a box again — a “72-inch screen that comes out of this crate” (MA 017) rolled into the pods at 201 Poplar the way the tube TVs went up the backyard ramps (PK 027–028) — a service “just like a church service here” (MA 015), a room of residents shouting “When I get out, I’m going to church” (MA 022), and men who walk into Highland or Austin Peay after release saying “I feel love in this place” (MA 055). Emy’s own story began inside (“took place in the prison system,” EV 017); Matt’s is where the next one starts. Then the script’s own closing beats, which now have voices: the new building (Adam: the Global Hub, ground broken August 2026, finishing about September 2027, AB 148–165) and the new Bible School (Adrian: John’s Nashville mandate, 400 students in 11 countries in year one, AL 148–155). Then the roll-call — the Nashville and DC pickups still to come — and the circle closes: Nairobi Lighthouse joining the family (MM 120–122), the payoff of “200 times over” (MM 076), with Don’s blessing (DM 094) and the script’s line for John and Leslie, “we feel we are just getting started” (theirs to say on 8 October).
- Values shown, second time around: Vision — “a church in Europe for the kids of our kids” (MT 130); Emy’s “30 locations in 30 years”; Adrian’s intercontinental hub and ten churches in Africa (AL 207–212). Faith in crisis — Emy’s cancer, Marco’s COVID false start. Young People — Axis in Fitchburg, six to 185 (EV 049). Community — “We don’t feel alone anymore” (MT 114). Outreach — the township community center in Johannesburg (AL 220–226; MM 094–095).
- Script beats absorbed: Crazy Expansion · The Unfolding Picture of Locations (montage) · Future (new building, new Bible School).

Member voices — a 30 Stories pairing exercise
An exercise, not a cut. The movements above are carried on film by pastors and staff. The 30 Stories interviews hold thirty member households, one for each year since 1996, and many of them were in the room for the same moments. Below, movement by movement, are member lines that could sit beside a documentary beat, as a second witness, a cutaway or a rhyme. Each names the member and the year they arrived, then the 30 Stories film and the Premiere block in that person’s merged transcript (30 Stories/Source/Transcripts - merged). Quotes are the Scribe wording, word for word, with “um” and “uh” left out. In the Worship film (or another) marks a line a finished 30 Stories film already uses, or the Leadership or Next Gen script; the congregation will have heard those before the premiere, so reusing one is a callback. Everyone quoted is a member unless marked staff.
I · Sent
- Planted to send (“200 times over,” MM 076). Samina Russell (1997): “When Pastor John and Leslie left Kenya to plant The Life Church in Memphis, one of the things that they wanted to make sure was that they would be able to send missionaries out from The Life Church.” (Missions 113) — the members’ side of the promise, cut from the Missions film. Angel Criswell (2017) in two breaths: “our church, The Life Church, is, was born out of the mission field… From Nairobi, Kenya with Pastor John and Leslie.” (Missions 021).
- Seven people and their faith (PK 014). Lisa Mitchell (1996, former staff): “Oh my goodness, these seven people like just came up and planted this church with really nothing but their faith, honestly.” (Worship 022; in the Worship film).
II · Planted
- Launch Sunday (PK 021–023). Lisa is the only 30 Stories voice who was there: “Like decent, like maybe 150 people, you know, there that day.” (Worship 019–020). That is a third memory for the 8 October question, between Pete’s over 100 and Kristi’s 150 to 200.
- A rented hall. Samina Russell (1997): “Saturday nights they would rent it out for banquets, and then Sunday morning we would come in and have to clean up after them.” (Missions 025). Jane Lawson (1999), the same mornings: “there might be trash from the night before” (Leadership 009).
- The TVs up the ramps (PK 027–028). Jane: “So we literally had these ramps that were on both sides of the stage, and we would push the televisions up on the ramps and, and get those positioned for Sunday morning.” (Leadership 010). Mark VanBlaricom (2000): “It was a set up and tear down situation.” (Outreach 012).
- The nursery in the kitchen (PK). Julie VanBlaricom (2000): “in the kitchen at the Home Builders Association with the stove. We put, we changed diapers on the stove.” (Outreach 011).
- John on guitar, then the pulpit (DM 015, RC 002). Three members, three years. Samina (1997): “He played the guitar and led worship, and then he would put that down, and then he would preach.” (Missions 021). Steve Streitmatter (1998): “worship was an acoustic thing, again, being led by Pastor John in a suit” (Next Gen 066). Julie (2000): “Pastor John strapping on the guitar, taking it off, and then… taking the, the pulpit to do the message.” (Outreach 020).
- Known by name (“just a small group of people coming together,” PK 023). Samina: “Everyone acknowledged you.” (Missions 017). Jane: “So there were people that knew my name and, reached out, wanted to, you know, do things with me during the week.” (Leadership 004–005).
- The altar call, from the other side (PV 008–013). Parker remembers his family walking in during an altar call in August 2000. His father, Mark VanBlaricom, went forward: “I responded to the altar call.” (Outreach 009). And he kept going: “I think I responded for the next six or eight weeks.” (Outreach 006). Father and son on the same Sunday is the cleanest intercut in the set.
- A fresh start moment in 1997. Samina: “Pastor John gave, a fresh, did a fresh start moment and, that’s when I raised my hand, stood up, and accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.” (Missions 008). The moment John later filmed every week for the TV viewer (BP 040–041) began in the Home Builders hall.
- Believing big (“we’re not reaching far enough,” RC 019). Jane, on the move into the building: “he was believing big, and he knew that the church was going to explode.” (Leadership 018). Alberta Sullivan (2001), on Easter 2002: “Pastor John told each of the, each of the teams to double their teams because he was expecting an immediate growth” (Community 016–017).
- The word “planted.” Members still use the church’s own word for it. Katie Braswell (2007, staff): “Be planted in God’s house. Your life will flourish.” (Next Gen 021). T.K. Jones (2005, former staff): “you can’t bloom until you’re planted” (Missions 006). Lisa: “Like I was planted just as I was, and it was transformational to my life.” (Worship 056). It is a natural way into the movement that carries the name, and into the Psalm 92 this document closes on.
III · Multiplied
- The storm brought people (DL 012–014, JH 002–005, PV 022–033). Julie VanBlaricom: “So the hurricane brought a lot of people… That are now pillars and staff members in the church.” Mark, straight after: “Johnny Hill, for one.” (Outreach 035). That is a cut to Johnny’s own arrival. Dan was told to lead the relief without knowing who even owned a chainsaw (DL 013); Mark’s crew had them: “we just had chainsaws and a big group of guys” (Outreach 041). Julie: “we did cancel service that weekend” (Outreach 039). T.K. Jones, a few months after she started: “our church sent a team down to Biloxi, and I raised my hand to be a part of that church.” (Missions 017–018; in the Missions film).
- Young people, from the floor (DL 079, 090; PV 047–049, 103–105). Katie Braswell, her first Sunday in 2007: “everybody had this, like, swoopy hair, and just everybody looked so cool, and skinny jeans.” (Next Gen 011; in the Next Gen script). Kaymen Herrera (2014): “This is fun. Like, Axis is fun, and worship’s fun, and God’s fun. God’s house is fun.” (Next Gen 015). Kim London (2016), a parent: “Axis Conference is the absolute highlight of the year for them. I take off work the entire week” (Next Gen 021). And Parker from the other end of a text: “Pastor Parker texts me and is like, ‘Hey, we need volunteers for Axis Conference.’” (Next Gen 027; in the Next Gen script).
- John spotting the next one. Carol Moody (2008), a Saturday night with the Axis students at the stage: “he, he spoke to Donovan prophetically saying that, ‘God is gonna use you one day.’” (Outreach 018). Donovan is now the youth pastor at Highland; the Moodys date the night ten or eleven years ago.
- Outreach (MM 002, 013–017). Kelly White (2009): “We would come in and make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and take some games and go out to the apartment and just love on the people there, play with the kids.” (Outreach 011).
- The buildings (AB 019–080). Lisa, on the Collierville launch: “we were part of that team setting that mobile set up and tear down.” (Worship 037). That is church in a box a second time, and she did both. Dwayne Bufford (2010), Germantown Parkway on 31 January 2010: “the place was filling up even though it was a snowy, icy Sunday.” (Worship 009; partly in the Worship film). Carol Moody, how her family found it: “there was a big banner on the side of the building, and it had a picture, a cartoon picture of a monkey.” (Outreach 004).
- Worship (“We create space for God to create moments,” JH 038). Eric Criswell (2017): “Worship starts, and we look it over at each other, and literally tears are coming from our eyes.” (Missions 011). Dwayne: “I’m, I’m inviting Him in the room when I’m leading people for His presence to come in and set people free.” (Worship 028).
- The TV years (BP 016–019, 037–041). Phyllis Grandberry (2011) is the member who came through the screen: “So I was sitting up in the bed one Sunday morning, turned the TV on, and The Life Church popped up.” Then: “And I literally went the following Sunday to visit and never stopped coming.” (Missions 004–005).
IV · Family
- Diversity (WC 074–078; RC 017, 022). Jane, in the Germantown Parkway hallway: “as I saw the flood of people walking by, I realized God did it. He did it. He brought the diversity to our church.” (Leadership 052–053). She also remembers the early joint services: “we had actually what we called diversity services, and, we, along with a predominantly African American church and a church that was, Hispanic, we had three joint services.” (Leadership 057–058). Kelly White, her first Sunday: “I really loved the diversity. I have biracial children, so that’s really important to me.” (Outreach 006–007).
- A church that joined the family (2019, AB 094). Bella Chapman: “in 2019, I was a part of a church called The House Memphis, which is now The Life Church Austin Peay.” (Worship 003). It is the member’s side of the Austin Peay merger.
- COVID, online and then in the room (BP 021–036). Yunna Martin (2020): “It was like building community online with a church that had never, happened to me before.” (Community 006). Her first Sunday in person: “It was like, ‘Okay, it’s dark. Why is there smoke all around? what’s going on here?’ But it was the same. It was like jumping into the, the online, just in person.” (Community 013). And “nobody was forgotten” (BP 027) as she lived it, in GriefShare after her husband died: “Kimberly Denise, I remember coming over from Highland, over, and it’s like, ‘I’m not letting you go. You’re not gonna stop doing this.’” (Community 047).
- Raised up. Dwayne: “but God pulled me out. He, He pulled me out of the crowd and, and called me to leadership.” (Worship 017). David Epting (2018), a newcomer who hadn’t said he plays drums: “he looked at me and said, ‘Hey, I hope, to see you on stage leading worship one day.’” (Leadership 011).
V · Just Getting Started
- The prisons, from the pews (MA 015–022, 055). Carol Moody, about a man who came to Houston Levee after 201 Poplar: “he said that The Life Church was the only church that remembered them for Christmas.” Then: “He brought his wife, his childs, and they were all sitting in Discovery.” (Outreach 040–041; the Outreach film ends on this story). On Matt’s Sunday services now, she says the rhyme this movement is cut to: “I tear up, and I just think it takes so much work to go out and set up and do that every Sunday, but that’s, that’s what church is for.” (Outreach 043). She has Emy’s half too (EV 017): “another full circle moment is when Pastor Emy went and spoke to the inmates.” (Outreach 044). And beside “I feel love in this place” (MA 055), Kwanza Ozier (2022): “I was overwhelmed by the amount of love that I was shown from the very moment that I walked into the door.” (Worship 004–005).
- The same miracle twice, in the members’ words (AL 136). The first Sunday sounds the same, decades apart:
| Then | Now |
|---|---|
| Samina Russell, 1997: “as soon as I hit the door, people were like, ‘Hi, how are you doing? What’s your name?’” (Missions 007) | Jeremy Fields, 2023: “they, literally greeted me, was like, ‘Hey, how are you doing?’ Like, ‘Good to see you. Is this your first time here?’” (Missions 007–008) |
| Steve Streitmatter, 1998: “I, I really felt like God kinda whispered, ‘You’re home.’” (Next Gen 014) | David Epting, 2018: “we looked at each other and we just knew this is home.” (Leadership 007) |
| Jane Lawson, 1999: “the biggest thing that impacted me the most when I first came was just how genuine everybody was.” (Leadership 004) | Tommy Marshall, 2025: “they’re so happy to see you, and it’s genuine. It’s not faked.” (Leadership 007) |
| Randy Sullivan, 2001: “so friendly and so open and so welcoming, not even not knowing us” (Community 005; in the Community film) | Travis Yu, 2024: “My first few weeks coming to the church was warm, and it feels comfortable, and it feels welcoming.” (Community 007) |
| Ingrid Kimble, 2002: “it made me feel safe and welcome, all the way through the worship.” (Leadership 014) | Megan Marshall, 2025 (staff): “I know what it is, is I feel safe.” (Leadership 043) |
- Sent out, two hundred times over (MM 076, 120–122). Samina: “I can’t wait to see all of the new countries that we will be able to minister to in the coming years through church plants and missions.” (Missions 138). T.K. Jones: “I’m most excited about seeing a campus planted in Asia and Australia.” (Missions 051). The Criswells count their family’s trips: “18 international trips in nine years” (Missions 056).
- From a hundred people. Samina came when the church was ten months old: “Having come to the church twenty-nine years ago when we were only approximately 100 people and then sitting in church over this past Easter and seeing that the church has grown to over 20,000-plus people is incredible.” (Missions 128).
- Just getting started. The oldest voices and the newest say it before John and Leslie do. Jane: “And I can’t wait to see, you know, what God’s gonna do the next 30 years at The Life Church.” (Leadership 078). Jeremy Fields (2023): “I’m just excited to see what the next 30 years are going to bring, the next 50 years, the next 100 years are gonna bring because as long as there’s breath in my body, I get a chance to be a part of it.” (Missions 053–054). Marlencia Walker (2021): “My son’s like, ‘I gotta tell people about Jesus.’ It’s like, yeah, that is what we’re excited about, is to see the next generation take this thing even further in the next 30 years.” (Community 050–051). And Kwanza, to John and Leslie: “you’re now impacting generations and generations to come, and you are changing people’s literal bloodlines” (Worship 049).
The Identity bridge, and John and Leslie as people
- “What I found at The Life Church is…” Every 30 Stories interview answered that line, and most of the answers close their own films, so in the bridge they would land as a callback. The Outreach film cut its run, so two are unheard. Kelly White: “What I found at The Life Church is family.” (Outreach 027). Carol Moody: “So what I found at The Life Church is growth.” (Outreach 058). Not used anywhere: T.K. Jones, “I found my home.” (Missions 050), and the Criswells, “We don’t wanna leave. I mean, we’re literally, like, the last people to leave every week.” (Missions 059–060).
- John, as members meet him. David Epting, a newcomer in a full auditorium: “He goes, ‘David, I, I don’t know you. Are you, are you new here?’” (Leadership 010). LaHenrya Boyd (2006), on the first sermon she heard, about giving (“you can’t out give God,” RC 016): “he was like, ‘Can I have some of your fries?’ And they were like, ‘No.’ And he was like, ‘But I gave you those fries.’” (Community 011). Kim London: “I was able to sit down and listen to Pastor John preach, I just felt this weight lift off of me.” (Next Gen 016–017).
- Leslie, before Zoe (see Who is not on film yet, above). Carol Moody: “in 2009 we had, once a quarter, Pastor Leslie would host Chick Night, and it was for all the girls. this was before Zoe.” (Outreach 013). It is the clearest memory of Leslie in the thirty interviews, and a way into the Zoe question on 8 October.
What the members add to the record
- The room, year by year: about 150 on launch Sunday (Lisa, 1996); about 100 at ten months (Samina, Missions 020); “the 50 or 60 people” at Steve’s first service in September 1998 (Next Gen 015), which fits the “cut in half” (PK 032–033); about 100 again in 1999 and 2000 (Jane, Leadership 012; Mark, Outreach 015); about 200, still in the Home Builders hall, in July 2001 (Alberta, Community 007); about 150 in 2002 (Ingrid, Leadership 009); about 300 across two services after the move (Jane, Leadership 018). These are memories, not counts.
- Katrina weekend: the church cancelled its services, and Julie puts “at least half the church, maybe more” on the relief trips (Outreach 039).
- The fresh start moment predates the TV program (Samina, 1997, above), and The House Memphis became The Life Church Austin Peay in 2019 (Bella, above).
- Staff: of the people quoted here, Lisa (finance and discipleship, for a couple of years) and T.K. were on staff, and Katie and Megan are now. Everyone else is a member.
For the rough cut. Movement III is still the test (see Pressure test): if the six staff threads play as a roll-call, the member lines under III are the cheapest fix. Movement V’s rhyme is already in the members’ own words, and the table above is a cross-cut ready to build. By the premiere the congregation will have seen all six 30 Stories films, so the lines marked as in a film work as callbacks and the rest are new.
What this changes in the script, concretely
- Shrink §IV Features to an Identity bridge (3–4 min), don’t delete it. The values are shown inside the movements; the bridge states them once, plainly — and Outreach earns a slot there now that Mundo is on film. Keep the framing question as John’s VO into it.
- Move §III The Unfolding Picture of Locations into that bridge, so every campus — domestic, international, Nashville, DC, the prisons — is named and seen, and Movement V’s montage carries only the story locations.
- Retire §V Interviews as a block, but pin about ten witnesses. The pairing exercise leans hardest on Lisa (1996), Samina (1997), Jane (1999), the VanBlaricoms (2000), the Sullivans (2001), the Moodys (2008), Phyllis (2011), Yunna (2020), Jeremy (2023) and Travis Yu (2024); see Member voices. They are the film’s member voices, and Movement III’s only ones.
- Plant and pay off the Nairobi word. John tells “200 times over” in Movement I; the film ends on Nairobi Lighthouse joining the family. That is the strongest ending on film, and it is already true.
- Keep the bookends as written: the Intro VO, now over the scene shot for it (entering the building, the green room, the team, the morning’s service flows; see Intro above), and the Future sit-down.
Pressure test — five lenses, one verdict (17 September; updated)
A blind panel (advocate, skeptic, realist, audience, best-alternative) tested the first draft:
- Strongest point in favour: the material is already chronological and the 30 Stories clips are cut one per year, so pinning them reduces work; the origin/echo rhyme gives the last act an argument.
- Strongest objection: coverage clumped at both ends, the longest movement had the least film, and deleting Features removed the one place the values are said out loud.
- The audience risk: a member at a campus with no interview checks one thing — do I exist in this story — which is why the roll-call moves into the bridge and the Nashville/DC/prison pickups were planned (the prisons are now on film).
- The realist’s clock: rough cut 30 September, one editor who is also shooting.
Verdict: RESHAPE — keep the five movements and the rhyme (as kinship: we are them, never they are behind us), shrink Features to a bridge that names every campus, pin ten witnesses, and direct the John & Leslie sit-down into the movements’ values. Update, 25 September: the objection that killed the middle is answered — Movement III has six voices — so the cheapest test is now also the fair one: rough-assemble Movement III first. A same-day check before that: grid the five movements × values and mark which cells already have a logged clip.
John & Leslie — 8 October
The brief — Thirty Years, Thirty Years - Brief for John and Leslie.html (+ .pdf, and a private artifact). Rewritten 26 September as a plan rather than options, in the third person: the interview topics by film part, who already covers each part on film, the three dates still to confirm where they come up (the Nairobi years, launch-Sunday attendance, the Collierville YMCA years), a short summary of each interview, and (since 5 October) the interviews still to come with their dates (v1 and v2 are in tools/brief/). It follows the card rule in tools/README.md: no reveals. Almost every interview ends with a tribute to them, and none of those words are in the brief. They are here instead.
Held back for the room — the tributes, verbatim (for a reaction beat, or for John and Leslie to see first in the cut; ⟨i⟩ = speaker label inferred, listen first):
- Don Matheny: “your heart has never changed. Your heart and passion have only increased” (094) · “I wouldn’t say anything. I’d be just crying” (093)
- Pete & Kristi: Pete — “We would not be the people we are today if it wasn’t for John and Leslie… in a way they’re closer than family” (053) · Kristi — “who they are at home is who they are on stage” (049–050)
- Rob Carter: “I never met anyone in my life that had more courage and more conviction that standing still was the wrong thing to do” (023)
- Johnny Hill: “I’ve seen them be consistent over 21 years… I’ve seen them take the bruises” (058–059)
- Dan Lord: “Pastor Leslie, one of the most sincere people in the whole world” [101] · “I have a Pastor John on my shoulder” [102]
- Wayne & Classy: Wayne — “Our lives are bigger, better, brighter... because of the Siebelings” (134) · Classy — “their marriage is a picture of how I want our marriage to be” (134–136)
- Emy Vazquez: “That’s my pastor… and I’m for him. And I got their back” (073) · “Pastor John makes me a better person” (103)
- Josh & Jessica: Josh — “There isn’t a public Pastor John and Pastor Leslie and a private…” [050–051] · Jessica ⟨i⟩ — “hubo una ganancia, no hubo una pérdida” [066]
- Marco & Tiina: Marco — “They’re like our heroes” [101] · Tiina — “We don’t feel alone anymore” [114]
- Adam Bartlett: “I never have been the building guy for Pastor John… I’ve always been Adam Bartlett” [173]
- Mundo Meneses: “they have never asked people to do something that they’re not willing to do themselves” [112]
- Parker VanBlaricom: “they are in a lot of ways like spiritual parents to me” [137]
- Adrian & Leigh: Adrian — “He’s like the Mr. Miyagi of this whole movement” [178] · on Leslie, “that glue behind the scenes” [182]
- Matt Anzivino: “the kindness that he showed the first time I met him” [077] · “this church is known for its love and its kindness and its generosity” [078]
Must-gets, by movement (the brief invites these gently; the harder versions stay here):

Risks and open questions
- Movement III crowding. Six voices, all staff. One owner per thread; pin the 30 Stories members.
- Chronology can flatten into “and then.” The defence is the rhyme and now the Nairobi circle.
- Three ARC meetings (Dan, Emy, Wayne). One full telling, two glimpses.
- Subtitles. Jessica answers largely in Spanish; her transcript carries it verbatim.
- A line asked off the record, on the record. Kristi (PK 056 ⟨i⟩) asks that her “superstar pastors… they fall” remark stay out; Brian agrees on film (057). Brian’s standing rule: nothing is gated — noted so it is a decision, not an accident.
- Numbers that are Brian’s, not the subject’s: the “100 people → 20, 25,000” line in Matheny’s session is the interviewer’s. A member does say it on film: Samina Russell, “the church has grown to over 20,000-plus people” at Easter (30S, Missions 128). Florence’s “2,076” is said as “two thousand seventy-six” (MT 070) and “2000 and 76” (MT 071).
- Figures that disagree on film: Mundo’s food-insecurity rates (MM 055 vs 058); the Wrights’ land size (AL 208–219 — “forty five acres” is the clean line); Josh’s three “years portable” figures; Dan’s first Axis Conference worked out on camera (2009, confirmed by Parker); when the prisons began — “two and a half years ago” (MA 011), “two and a half, maybe three years” (MA 051).
- The lower-level story turns on a reveal (MA 044): the officer tells Matt the man he just prayed with committed a crime that made national news. Matt names neither the man nor the crime, and the film shouldn’t either; the scene works without them.
- Transcript hygiene. “Life.Church” is normalised out of the ten 17–25 Sep transcripts but still in the Matheny and Vazquez bodies; “access” → Axis wherever it is the ministry (every one of Parker’s 82; not Mundo’s one ordinary “access”); “Siebling” → Siebeling; Emy’s student ministry is Axis, not “Access.” Whisper’s lowercase-unpunctuated stretches were re-run with a primed prompt for the Wrights, Parker and Mundo (new tools/whisper_flat_spans.py); Sciacchetano ~022–046, Geraci ~044–099, Dan Lord 001–008 and Vazquez ~039–043 still have them — the same fix would clean those in an hour of CPU. Premiere’s FIND keys keep whatever Premiere heard.
